If you\u2019re a human, it wants in. Regardless of age, race, or sex, the virus appears to infect people&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/kids-can-get-covid-19-they-just-dont-get-that-sick\/\">at the same rate<\/a>. Which makes sense, given that it\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/chinas-swift-id-of-a-new-virus-is-a-win-for-public-health\/\">a totally new pathogen<\/a>&nbsp;against which approximately zero humans have preexisting immunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:24px\">But&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/coronavirus-has-a-name-the-deadly-disease-is-covid-19\/\">the disease it causes<\/a>, Covid-19, is more mercurial in its manifestations. Only some infected people ever get sick. Those who do experience a wide range of symptoms. Some get fever and a cough. For others it\u2019s stomach cramps and diarrhea. Some lose their appetite. Some lose their&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/first-denial-then-fear-covid-19-patients-in-their-own-words\/\">sense of smell<\/a>. Some can wait it out at home with a steady diet of fluids and&nbsp;<em>The Great British Baking Show.<\/em>&nbsp;Others drown in a sea of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/race-build-more-ventilators-coronavirus\/\">breathing tubes<\/a>&nbsp;futilely forcing air into their flooded lungs. Old people, those with underlying conditions,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/covid-19-is-killing-more-men-than-women-here-are-some-theories\/\">and men<\/a>&nbsp;make up the majority of the casualties. But not always. In the US, an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/69\/wr\/mm6912e2.htm\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">alarmingly high fraction<\/a>&nbsp;of those hospitalized with severe symptoms are adults under the age of 40. Kids, and in particular infants,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/most-kids-only-get-mildly-sick-from-covid-19-but-not-all\/\">aren\u2019t invincible either<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:24px\">To understand what accounts for these differences, scientists have been scouring\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/doctors-are-pooling-data-to-help-understand-covid-19\/\">the patchy epidemiological data<\/a>\u00a0coming out of hotspots like China, Italy, and the US, looking for patterns in patients\u2019 age, race, sex, socioeconomic status, behaviors, and access to health care.
