Produced by the adrenal glands, cortisol also helps regulate blood sugar, blood pressure and immune function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But while cortisol is helpful in short bursts, too much of it can create a host of physical problems. Fitness guru Liz Tenuto (@theworkoutwitch)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@theworkoutwitch\/video\/7353756337932602666\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recently took to TikTok<\/a>&nbsp;to reveal 10 surprisingly specific signs that your cortisol levels might be through the roof, all thanks to stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Typically harmless, eye twitches are often the first physical sign that stress is taking its toll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the muscles around our eyes are small and weak, they\u2019re the \u201cfirst responders\u201d to elevated cortisol levels. When cortisol spikes, it acts like a stimulant (think: caffeine), causing muscles to contract or spasm involuntarily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bloating<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember \u201cmoon face\u201d? It&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/08\/02\/health\/what-is-moon-face-heres-when-to-worry-about-cortisol\/\">took TikTok by storm<\/a>&nbsp;last year, with beauty influencers warning that facial puffiness could be a sign of high cortisol levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While cortisol has its benefits, too much of it can mess with the body\u2019s salt and water balance, leading to fluid retention and bloating.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In rare cases, facial swelling can also be a sign of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/02\/24\/entertainment\/amy-schumer-diagnosed-with-rare-health-disorder-something-was-wrong\/\">Cushing\u2019s syndrome<\/a>, when the body produces too much cortisol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it doesn\u2019t just affect your face \u2014 elevated cortisol levels can also reduce blood flow to the digestive system, disrupting bowel function and gut bacteria. The result? Poor digestion, excess gas and more bloating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Random bruising<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re noticing unexplained bruises, it could be a sign that your cortisol levels are too high.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elevated cortisol levels can&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/beauty-skin-care\/stress-skin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">weaken structural proteins in the skin<\/a>, making the skin thinner and more fragile.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Too much cortisol also weakens the walls of small blood vessels, making them more prone to damage and bleeding, even from minor trauma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hair loss<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Chronic stress can also affect your hairline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2021\/03\/researchers-discover-how-chronic-stress-leads-to-hair-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has shown<\/a>&nbsp;that elevated cortisol can lead to hair loss by forcing follicle stem cells into a prolonged resting phase, preventing new hair from growing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of that, when the adrenal glands are focused on producing extra cortisol, they produce fewer of the hormones that support healthy hair growth, like testosterone and estrogen. This hormone imbalance can contribute to thinning hair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Worsening vision<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>High cortisol levels may be putting your vision at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When cortisol spikes, it can&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulanetwork.com\/blog\/studies-have-found-that-persistent-stress-raises-your-cortisol-levels-which-can-contribute-to-eye-issues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">disrupt blood flow&nbsp;<\/a>from the eye to the brain, leading to potential vision problems. Elevated cortisol can also increase pressure within the eye, which, over time, raises the risk of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/04\/01\/health\/ophthalmologists-provide-complex-eye-care-when-to-see-one-and-what-to-expect\/\">developing glaucoma<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 a serious, sight-threatening condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s not all. Hormonal changes caused by high cortisol are also linked to dry eyes, blurred vision and heightened sensitivity to light.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Brain fog<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Struggling to focus? High cortisol levels could be to blame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chronic stress sends cortisol levels through the roof, which can&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/aviv-clinics.com\/blog\/brain-health\/how-cortisol-stress-hormone-affects-brain-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interfere with brain regions<\/a>&nbsp;responsible for memory, focus and decision-making. As a result, you might find it harder to concentrate, recall information or think clearly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it doesn\u2019t stop there. Tinnitus can heighten stress and anxiety, creating a vicious cycle. The more stressed you feel, the worse the ringing gets, which, in turn, ramps up your stress levels and causes cortisol levels to spike even further.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Extreme temperatures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ever experienced sudden hot flashes followed by a chill? High cortisol could be to blame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When cortisol levels spike, they can mess with how the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/biodesignwellness.com\/blog\/stop-losing-sleep-over-hot-flashes-and-night-sweats-the-cortisol-connection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">brain responds to estrogen<\/a>, triggering hot flashes \u2014 even if your estrogen levels are perfectly normal.
