Mr. Delfraissy suggested that \u201clessons must be learned\u201d from the 2019 disaster to ensure \u201cprecautions in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The academy, Acad\u00e9mie Nationale de M\u00e9decine in French, was founded in 1820 and is one of the country\u2019s most preeminent medical bodies. A non-government organization, it advises the French government on health issues much as the American Medical Association offers input to the American government in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During Wednesday\u2019s press conference, one of the report\u2019s co-authors, Christine Rouzioux, noted the academy\u2019s finding that the laboratory in Wuhan was \u201cinsufficient in terms of bioprotection of personnel and the environment.\u201d She urged scientists to develop \u201ca culture of risk and responsibility\u201d and lamented that \u201crisks are underestimated by a number of researchers.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the report does not offer a definitive explanation for Covid-19\u2019s origins, it adds to the mounting evidence that the highly contagious disease did not originate naturally.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In January, the CIA claimed that Covid-19 was \u201cmore likely\u201d to have leaked from a lab in Wuhan, China, than to have originated from animals. Officials noted that the finding did not suggest a new \u201csmoking gun\u201d but reflected analysis on existing data. The intelligence agency, however, warned that it had \u201clow confidence\u201d in its conclusion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China\u2019s foreign ministry rejected the CIA\u2019s assessment, stating that \u201cThe conclusion that a laboratory leak is extremely unlikely was reached by the China-WHO joint expert team based on field visits to relevant laboratories in Wuhan,\u201d spokeswoman Mao Ning said. \u201cThis has been widely recognized by the international community and the scientific community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China has long denied that the disease stemmed from a lab leak, denouncing the hypothesis as \u201cpolitical manipulation\u201d by Washington. American officials, on the other hand, have claimed that the government is unlikely to come to a definitive conclusion on the origins of the virus without greater cooperation from China.
