{"id":11916,"date":"2025-08-06T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-06T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cov19longhaulfoundation.org\/?p=11916"},"modified":"2025-05-10T13:26:46","modified_gmt":"2025-05-10T17:26:46","slug":"long-term-impact-of-covid-19-on-physical-cognitive-and-psychological-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cov19longhaulfoundation.org\/?p=11916","title":{"rendered":"Long-Term Impact of COVID-19 on Physical, Cognitive, and Psychological Health"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">The following is a summary of \u201cA biopsychosocial analysis of risk factors for persistent physical, cognitive, and psychological symptoms among previously hospitalized post-COVID-19 patients,\u201d published in the April 2025 issue of&nbsp;<em>Scientific Reports&nbsp;<\/em>by Claessens et al.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Many survivors of COVID-19 report persistent physical, cognitive, and psychological symptoms. These can last up to 1 year after hospital discharge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers conducted a retrospective study to assess the frequency, severity, and progression of persistent symptoms in survivors with COVID-19.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They conducted a single-center retrospective cohort study with 126 patients with COVID-19 admitted to the VieCuri Medical Centre between 2020 and 2022. Follow-up assessments occurred at 3- and 12-months post discharge, including pulmonary function tests, CT scans, bioimpedance analysis, and questionnaires on physical, cognitive, and psychological symptoms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The results showed that 31\u201332% of patients reported moderate to severe physical symptoms, 26\u201327% reported multiple cognitive symptoms, and 14\u201318% experienced depressive or posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSSs) at both follow-ups. Anxiety symptoms significantly decreased from 22% to 12% (<em>P\u2009<\/em>=\u2009.014).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Investigators found that symptom persistence at 12 months was linked to premorbid conditions, illness severity, physical factors, and cognitive and psychological factors (<em>P\u2009<\/em>&lt;\u2009.05).
