{"id":1297,"date":"2021-07-30T20:40:43","date_gmt":"2021-07-30T20:40:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.cov19longhaulfoundation.org\/?p=1297"},"modified":"2021-07-30T20:40:43","modified_gmt":"2021-07-30T20:40:43","slug":"evidence-shows-that-covid-19-attacks-blood-vessels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cov19longhaulfoundation.org\/?p=1297","title":{"rendered":"Evidence Shows that COVID-19 Attacks Blood Vessels"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Authors: Carolyn Crist<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:24px\">As researchers learn more about COVID-19, they\u2019ve seen reports from patients about unusual rashes, blood clots, and strokes, which could all be linked to damaged blood vessels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:24px\">Scientists are now looking at the vascular system, which includes arteries, veins, and capillaries, to monitor the various ways that the coronavirus attacks the body, according&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2020\/11\/05\/917317541\/clots-strokes-and-rashes-is-covid-19-a-disease-of-the-blood-vessels\">to NPR<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:24px\">In particular, they\u2019ve found that the virus seems to attack the endothelium, or the single layer of cells that line the inside of blood vessels. These cells prevent clotting, control blood pressure, and protect the body from invading pathogens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:24px\">\u201cWhen the virus damages the inside of the blood vessel and shreds the lining, that\u2019s like the ice after a hockey game,\u201d William Li, a vascular biologist at the Angiogenesis Foundation, told NPR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:24px\">Li and a group of international researchers&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2015432\">published a study<\/a>&nbsp;this July that found lung tissue damage in COVID-19 patients. As compared with patients who died from the flu, the lung tissue of coronavirus patients had nine times as many small blood clots.
