href=\"https:\/\/slaynews.com\/author\/frank-bergman\/\">Frank Bergman<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Newly obtained documents reveal that Dr. Anthony Fauci was scrambling to destroy evidence after he was warned that his dangerous research could have devastating consequences for humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fauci ordered an aide to permanently delete an official email exchange after a journalist warned that dangerous gain-of-function research could unleash an \u201cengineered doomsday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The extraordinary exchange occurred in 2012, eight years before the COVID-19 pandemic emerged and reignited a global battle over risky laboratory experiments and the possibility of a lab-related origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The documents show Fauci privately fuming over New York Times science writer Phil Boffey\u2019s scrutiny of experiments that created an airborne strain of bird flu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After complaining about Boffey in an NIH email, Fauci gave his subordinate an explicit instruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPlease delete this e-mail and then delete from the deleted file,\u201d Fauci wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The revelation adds to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsgac.senate.gov\/media\/reps\/chairman-rand-paul-uncovers-new-evidence-of-fauci-deleting-official-records-calls-him-to-testify-before-hsgac\/\">growing evidence<\/a>&nbsp;that Fauci sought to destroy government records despite later testifying under oath that he never did so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Destroying federal government records is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/uscode\/text\/18\/2071\">prohibited<\/a>&nbsp;under federal law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Journalist Warned of \u2018Engineered Doomsday\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The controversy began during the first major public reckoning over gain-of-function research in 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dutch virologist Ron Fouchier had conducted experiments, funded by Fauci\u2019s institute at the National Institutes of Health, that produced an airborne strain of bird flu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The natural virus had an estimated&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/bird-flu\/php\/surveillance\/chart-epi-curve-ah5n1.html\">50% fatality rate<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fouchier&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/scientists-brace-media-storm-around-controversial-flu-studies\">described<\/a>&nbsp;the laboratory-created strain as \u201cprobably one of the most dangerous viruses you can make.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The research immediately triggered fears over what could happen if such a virus escaped from a laboratory or the methods used to create it fell into the hands of terrorists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fauci publicly defended the research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a December 2011 Washington Post&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/a-flu-virus-risk-worth-taking\/2011\/12\/30\/gIQAM9sNRP_story.html\">editorial<\/a>&nbsp;co-authored with then-NIH Director Francis Collins and National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Vaccine Research Center official Gary Nabel, Fauci argued that research involving manmade pandemic viruses represented a \u201crisk worth taking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The argument was that such experiments could allow drugmakers and public health authorities to prepare in advance if similar viruses emerged naturally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boffey was far less convinced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January 2012, The New York Times&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/01\/08\/opinion\/sunday\/an-engineered-doomsday.html\">published<\/a>&nbsp;an un-bylined op-ed warning that the NIH had helped create an \u201c<strong>engineered doomsday<\/strong>\u201d capable of killing \u201chundreds of millions of people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The newly released emails reveal Boffey as the author of that piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe consequences, should the virus escape, are too devastating to risk,\u201d Boffey warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fauci Raged Behind the Scenes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boffey returned to the controversy in March 2012 with another&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/03\/04\/opinion\/sunday\/the-truth-about-the-doomsday-virus.html\">article<\/a>&nbsp;titled \u201cThe Truth About the&nbsp;<strong>Doomsday<\/strong>&nbsp;Virus?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By then, Fouchier had begun walking back some of his earlier descriptions of the virus\u2019s lethality as scrutiny intensified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boffey remained skeptical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Experts who had reviewed the original description of the experiment said it indicated that the airborne laboratory virus remained as lethal as the natural strain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fauci, meanwhile, was pushing for the details of Fouchier\u2019s experiment to be published despite concerns from biosecurity experts that the information could be exploited by a bioterrorist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One passage from Boffey particularly angered Fauci.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow, this country\u2019s National Institutes of Health, which financed the research and has its own reputation on the line, is asking the [NSABB] to reconsider its call to redact details before publication,\u201d Boffey wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fauci complained about the journalist to Collins on March 4, 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPhil Boffey is really off base here,\u201d Fauci wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe is acting like a mischievous guy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following morning, Fauci was even more candid in an email to a subordinate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cClearly, people are getting to Phil Boffey, and he is swallowing it,\u201d Fauci wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fauci strongly opposed a recommendation from the NIH\u2019s biosecurity advisers that sensitive details from Fouchier\u2019s experiment should not be published.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He warned that if the advisers refused to reverse course, \u201cthe field of research on influenza \u2026 has a serious problem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then came Fauci\u2019s instruction to erase the correspondence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPlease delete this e-mail and then delete from the deleted file,\u201d he wrote from his NIH email account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rand Paul Uncovered Other Fauci Deletion Requests<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The email adds another example to evidence uncovered by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) involving Fauci\u2019s handling of official records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paul previously&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsgac.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025.09.09_SRP-Letter-to-ASF_Final1.pdf\">highlighted<\/a>&nbsp;two instances from 2020 in which Fauci apparently sought to have government records deleted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those revelations stand in stark contrast to Fauci\u2019s sworn testimony before a congressional committee in 2024 that he had never deleted official records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fauci ultimately&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cidrap.umn.edu\/avian-influenza-bird-flu\/fouchier-study-reveals-changes-enabling-airborne-spread-h5n1\">succeeded in persuading<\/a>&nbsp;the NIH\u2019s biosecurity advisers to allow Fouchier\u2019s controversial experiment to be published in full.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Years later, both men would become involved in another far more consequential debate over dangerous virus research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fouchier Reemerged in COVID Origins Battle<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When COVID-19 emerged, Fouchier worked with Fauci and other virologists as the possibility that the virus originated in a laboratory came under intense scrutiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fouchier&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/usrtk.org\/covid-19-origins\/paper-critical-of-lab-leak-theory-cribbed-ideas-from-controversial-gain-of-function-virologist\/\">ghostwrote<\/a>&nbsp;a key argument incorporated into \u201cThe Proximal Origin of SARS-CoV-2,\u201d the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/usrtk.org\/covid-19-origins\/paper-critical-of-lab-leak-theory-cribbed-ideas-from-controversial-gain-of-function-virologist\/\">influential paper<\/a>&nbsp;that dismissed a possible laboratory origin for the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fauci repeatedly cited the paper and its authors in subsequent years without revealing his behind-the-scenes&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/usrtk.org\/covid-19-origins\/timeline-the-proximal-origin-of-sars-cov-2\/\">collaboration<\/a>&nbsp;with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Privately, however, the paper\u2019s own authors acknowledged Fouchier\u2019s potential conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/usrtk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Andersen-Feburary-8-1.png\">described<\/a>&nbsp;him as \u201cunbelievably conflicted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRon \u2026 is not going to want it to be a GOF [gain-of-function] escape,\u201d one author&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/usrtk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Ron.is-not-going-to-want-it-to-be-a-GOF-escape.png\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fouchier himself&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/usrtk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/harm-to-science.png\">opposed<\/a>&nbsp;publicly addressing the lab-leak possibility in the \u201cProximal Origin\u201d paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/usrtk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/harm-to-science.png\">warned<\/a>&nbsp;that doing so could cause \u201charm to science\u201d by reigniting scrutiny of laboratory biosafety and gain-of-function research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis manuscript would be much stronger if it focused on the likelihood of the first two scenarios as compared to intentional or accidental release,\u201d Fouchier&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/usrtk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Fouchier-serial-passage.png\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat would also limit the chance of new biosafety discussions that would unnecessarily obstruct future attempts of virus culturing for research and diagnostic purposes for any (emerging\/zoonotic) virus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eight years before COVID transformed the world, Boffey had already warned that the consequences of a dangerous laboratory virus escaping could be catastrophic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The newly uncovered documents now show that Fauci\u2019s private response to that scrutiny included an extraordinary instruction to an aide: delete the email, and then permanently erase it from the deleted folder.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Frank Bergman Newly obtained documents reveal that Dr. Anthony Fauci was scrambling to destroy evidence after he was warned that his dangerous research could have devastating consequences for humanity.
