One critic says the study, which found the drug led to fewer\u00a0COVID-19 deaths, did not used a randomized trial and patients not administered the drug were more likely to die\u00a0anyway.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A recent Henry Ford Health System study finding COVID-19 patients treated with hydroxycloroquine<\/a> were less likely to die from the virus is drawing skepticism from some medical professionals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Critics say the research is an \u201cobservational study\u201d that did not make use of random control groups. Steven Nissen<\/strong>, chief academic officer of the Heart & Vascular Institute at the Cleveland Clinic, says the study\u2019s methodology preordained its conclusion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI can tell you it doesn\u2019t prove anything.\u201d \u2014 Steven Nissen, Cleveland Clinic<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

In a randomized study, \u201cyou assign people to get one therapy or another and then find out how they do,\u201d Nissen said. This study, however, \u201cwas what\u2019s known as an observational study, where you look at people who got the drug compared to people who didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nissen says the Henry Ford patients not given hydroxychloroquine based on risk of side effects were already more likely to die from the virus. The Henry Ford researchers counter that they used different dosing methods than other studies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Henry Ford says its study is peer reviewed, Nissen says that does not mean the findings are credible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat a peer review person might have said is \u2018look, it\u2019s worth publishing but it doesn\u2019t prove anything\u2019 and I can tell you it doesn\u2019t prove anything,\u201d Nissen said. \u201dAnd there is nobody who\u2019s working in this area who has any knowledge of this that says it\u2019s a reliable study.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nissen\u00a0says the\u00a0US\u00a0Food and Drug Administration has verified hydroxychloroquine\u00a0does not help treat\u00a0COVID-19 through studies using random control groups.\u00a0The\u00a0FDA\u00a0recently withdrew permission for the treatment<\/a>\u00a0based on more reliable studies that contradict the health system\u2019s\u00a0findings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
