{"id":2476,"date":"2021-08-19T18:34:33","date_gmt":"2021-08-19T18:34:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.cov19longhaulfoundation.org\/?p=2476"},"modified":"2021-08-19T18:34:33","modified_gmt":"2021-08-19T18:34:33","slug":"us-covid-19-breakthrough-infections-are-uncommon-rising-considerably-and-d-19-breakthrough-infections-are-uncommon-rising-considerably-and-sort-of-okay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cov19longhaulfoundation.org\/?p=2476","title":{"rendered":"US Covid-19 Breakthrough Infections-are-Uncommon Rising Considerably and D-19 Breakthrough Infections are Uncommon, Rising Considerably, and  Sort of Okay"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Authors: <a href=\"https:\/\/theweek.com\/authors\/peter-weber\">PETER WEBER<\/a> 5:20 AM<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">The Biden administration is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theweek.com\/coronavirus\/1003880\/us-to-start-offering-covid-19-booster-shots-to-all-americans-beginning-sept-20\">advising eight-month booster shots<\/a>&nbsp;for Americans vaccinated with the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines because the Delta variant, which now accounts for&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2021\/08\/18\/covid-booster-faq\/\">about 98.8 percent of new U.S. infections<\/a>, is a lot more contagious and the effectiveness of the vaccines appears&nbsp;to wane with time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">&#8220;Fortunately,&#8221; the COVID-19 vaccines are &#8220;still holding at a high level&#8221; of protection from hospitalization and death,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2021\/08\/18\/covid-booster-faq\/\">Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said Wednesday<\/a>. &#8220;But our anticipation is that if the trajectory that we are seeing continues &#8230; we will likely see in the future an increase in breakthrough hospitalizations and breakthrough deaths&#8221; without boosters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">Even as the Delta variant surges, &#8220;COVID-19 breakthrough cases remain uncommon,&#8221;&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/as-delta-surges-covid-19-breakthrough-cases-remain-uncommon-11629199800?mod=hp_lead_pos5\"><em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em>&nbsp;reports<\/a>, citing its own analysis of data from health departments in 44 states and Washington, D.C.&nbsp;In those states, about 0.1 percent of vaccinated residents got COVID between Jan. 1 and early August, the&nbsp;<em>Journal<\/em>&nbsp;found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">&#8220;This continues to be &#8216;a pandemic of the unvaccinated,'&#8221; but &#8220;breakthrough infections accounted for 12 percent to 24 percent of COVID-related hospitalizations&#8221; in seven states keeping detailed records,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/08\/17\/health\/covid-vaccinated-infections.html\"><em>The New York Times<\/em>&nbsp;reports<\/a>, citing its analysis. Those breakthrough cases are mostly among older or immunocompromised adults \u2014 in Oregon, for example, the median age for a breakthrough-associated death is 83, and&nbsp;74 percent of breakthrough cases nationwide are among people 65 and older, federal data show.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">The overall numbers remain&nbsp;small, but it&#8217;s pretty clear&nbsp;&#8220;the chances of a breakthrough infection have gone up considerably,&#8221;&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/08\/17\/health\/covid-vaccinated-infections.html\">U.C. San Francisco&#8217;s Dr. Robert Wachter&nbsp;tells the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em><\/a>. &#8220;Remember when the early vaccine studies came out, it was like nobody gets hospitalized, nobody dies,&#8221; he added. &#8220;That clearly is not true.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">&#8220;Let&#8217;s be real, here: Breakthrough infections are sort of okay,&#8221; Larry Corey, a virologist at Seattle&#8217;s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/as-delta-surges-covid-19-breakthrough-cases-remain-uncommon-11629199800?mod=hp_lead_pos5\">tells the&nbsp;<em>Journal<\/em><\/a>. &#8220;You get infected and you have a cold, maybe an achy fever for 24 hours.
