Meanwhile, the White House also has officially&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/08\/20\/politics\/white-house-teachers-essential-workers\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">designated teachers as &#8220;essential workers.&#8221;<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li><li>Just weeks after many European countries opened their borders to travelers within the continent,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/travel\/article\/europe-travel-windows-closing\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">some are closing again<\/a>, seemingly undermining efforts to salvage the continent&#8217;s vital summer tourism economy.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">US coronavirus deaths could top 6,000 a day by December in worst-case scenario, expert predicts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From CNN\u2019s Shelby Lin Erdman<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">The death toll from the coronavirus pandemic in the United States could spike to as high as 6,000 people a day by December in the worst-case scenario, according to Dr. Chris Murray, the chair of the&nbsp;Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">Currently, about 1,000 people are dying daily from the coronavirus in the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">In a new model released Friday, researchers at IHME predicted the number of daily deaths will decrease slowly in September &#8212; then rise to nearly 2,000 a day by the start of December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">But Murray told CNN that, \u201cdepending on what our leaders do,\u201d things can get worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cWe have a worse scenario in what we release and that\u2019s many, many more deaths,\u201d he said.&nbsp;\u201cAnd in fact, by the time December rolls around, if we don&#8217;t do anything at all, the daily death toll in the US would be much higher than the 2,000 deaths a day by December. It could be as high as 6,000 deaths a day.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">The new IHME forecast projects 310,000 deaths by December &#8212; 15,000 more than the previous forecast two weeks ago.
