{"id":2687,"date":"2021-08-23T17:13:08","date_gmt":"2021-08-23T17:13:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.cov19longhaulfoundation.org\/?p=2687"},"modified":"2021-08-23T17:13:08","modified_gmt":"2021-08-23T17:13:08","slug":"coronavirus-are-mouth-lesions-another-covid-19-symptom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cov19longhaulfoundation.org\/?p=2687","title":{"rendered":"Coronavirus: are mouth lesions another Covid-19 symptom?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A research team in Spain has published a study that finds some coronavirus sufferers with a skin rash also have enanthems, or mouth lesions.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Authors: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.as.com\/autor\/as_english\/a\/\">AS English<\/a>                        Update: 22 July 2020 15:28 EDT<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\"><strong>Lesions inside the mouth may be an indicator that a person has contracted the coronavirus<\/strong>, according to a study carried out in Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Six of 21 Covid-19 patients with skin rash also had mouth lesions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">Researchers at the Ram\u00f3n y Cajal University Hospital in Madrid say their findings show that&nbsp;<strong>around a third of Covid-19 sufferers found to have a skin rash also turn out to have rash-like oral-cavity lesions, known as enanthems<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">&#8220;<strong>Of 21 patients with Covid-19 and skin rash, 6 patients (29%) had enanthem<\/strong>,&#8221; researchers said in a paper&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamadermatology\/fullarticle\/2768252\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">published in the medical journal JAMA Dermatology<\/a>&nbsp;last Thursday. \u201cThe age range of these patients was between 40 and 69 years, and&nbsp;<strong>4 of the 6 (66%) were women<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">&#8220;<strong>This work describes preliminary observations<\/strong>&nbsp;and is limited by the small number of cases and the absence of a control group,\u201d they cautioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rash among less common Covid-19 symptoms listed by WHO<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/health-topics\/coronavirus#tab=tab_3\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the World Health Organization<\/a>&nbsp;(WHO),&nbsp;<strong>the most common symptoms of the coronavirus are a fever, a dry cough and tiredness<\/strong>, while the virus\u2019&nbsp;<strong>less common indicators include &#8220;a rash on skin, or discolouration of fingers or toes&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">Last week, however,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/coronavirus-skin-rash-can-be-only-covid-19-symptom-and-should-be-fourth-key-sign-study-finds-12029116\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a study carried out at King\u2019s College London<\/a>&nbsp;in the UK called for rashes &#8211; known as exanthems when they occur on the outside of the body &#8211;&nbsp;<strong>to be included as the fourth key symptom of Covid-19<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">The research, which is yet to be peer-reviewed, found that&nbsp;<strong>21% of people who had a skin rash and were suffering from Covid-19 reported that this was their only symptom<\/strong>&nbsp;of the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">In its findings in JAMA Dermatology, meanwhile, the team at the Ram\u00f3n y Cajal University Hospital noted that&nbsp;<strong>a recent study on patients in Italy had also underlined the apparently regular occurrence of rashes among Covid-19 patients<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Enanthems could help determine if skin rash linked to Covid-19<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">However, the Madrid study points out that&nbsp;<strong>establishing for certain that a skin rash has been brought about by the coronavirus &#8211; rather than another cause &#8211; is not straightforward<\/strong>. With this in mind, it says, the process of&nbsp;<strong>identifying a clear link could be helped by finding out whether or not a patient also has enanthems<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">&#8220;Whether these manifestations [skin rashes] are directly related to Covid-19 remains unclear,&nbsp;<strong>since both viral infections and adverse drug reactions are frequent causes of exanthems<\/strong>,&#8221; the Spanish researchers explain. &#8220;<strong>An important clue to distinguish between both entities is the presence of enanthem<\/strong>&nbsp;[\u2026].&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mouths not often checked for safety reasons<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">They also note, though, that&nbsp;<strong>an obstacle towards this is that the insides of mouths are often not checked by medical staff<\/strong>: \u201cOwing to safety concerns, many patients with suspected or confirmed Covid-19 do not have their oral cavity examined.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Live coverage of the coronavirus crisis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">At the time of writing,&nbsp;<strong>the coronavirus pandemic had led to 14,974,446 cases and 617,254 deaths worldwide<\/strong>.
