{"id":2830,"date":"2021-08-27T13:35:42","date_gmt":"2021-08-27T13:35:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.cov19longhaulfoundation.org\/?p=2830"},"modified":"2021-08-27T13:35:42","modified_gmt":"2021-08-27T13:35:42","slug":"bombshell-study-finds-natural-immunity-superior-to-vaccination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cov19longhaulfoundation.org\/?p=2830","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Bombshell\u2019 study finds natural immunity superior to vaccination"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\"><strong><em>If the findings are confirmed, the implications for Covid policy will be profound<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authors: BY\u00a0<strong>UNHERD<\/strong>                   Thursday, 26  August 2021<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2021.08.24.21262415v1\">major study<\/a>&nbsp;conducted by Israeli researchers into natural immunity has found that immunity acquired via infection from Covid-19 is superior to immunity from the Pfizer vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">Researchers at Maccabi Healthcare and Tel Aviv University compared the outcomes of over 76,000 Israelis in three groups: the doubly vaccinated (with the Pfizer vaccine), the previously infected but unvaccinated, and the previously infected with only a single vaccine dose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">They found that fully vaccinated but uninfected people were significantly more likely to have a \u201cbreakthrough\u201d Covid infection than people who had previously been infected and recovered from the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/unherd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screenshot-2021-08-26-at-10.45.09.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-198219\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">\u201cThis study demonstrated that natural immunity confers longer lasting and stronger protection against infection, symptomatic disease and hospitalisation caused by the Delta variant,\u201d the authors conclude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">The study is only published as a preprint at this stage and has not been peer reviewed. Critics including British immunologist Andrew Croxford have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/andrew_croxford\/status\/1430799822408273921\">pointed out<\/a>&nbsp;potential limitations, but it has been described by infectious diseases expert Professor Francois Balloux as a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BallouxFrancois\/status\/1430706897955565572\">bombshell<\/a>\u201d development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">If the findings are confirmed, the implications for global Covid policy will be profound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">It would not undermine the importance of vaccination for more vulnerable groups in society. However it would weaken the case for vaccinating children, despite the programme being&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/global-health\/science-and-disease\/coronavirus-news-covid-booster-vaccines-jabs-cases-deaths\/\">confirmed in the UK today<\/a>, as they (and the people around them) would get superior future protection from contracting the disease.
