class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why it matters:&nbsp;<\/strong>The dry eye&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/coronavirus\/2022\/1\/20\/22893028\/omicron-variant-symptom-early-warning-covid-19-pink-eye-infection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">COVID-19 symptom<\/a>&nbsp;joins a growing list of various coronavirus symptoms someone can experience after infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Driving the news<\/strong>: A new study from the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hkmj.org\/abstracts\/v25n1\/38.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Chinese University of Hong Kong<\/a>&nbsp;found that the risk of dry eye disease (DED) can increase for those who were infected by the coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/coronavirus\/2022\/1\/20\/22893028\/omicron-variant-symptom-early-warning-covid-19-pink-eye-infection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This omicron target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u2018Sore eyes\u2019 is one of the most common COVID-19 symptoms<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a noopener\">Coronavirus lingers in your eyes, study finds<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What they found:<\/strong>&nbsp;Researchers reviewed 228 cases of recovered COVID-19 patients from one to three months after infection and compared those records to 109 healthy people, per the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/hong-kong\/health-environment\/article\/3172177\/coronavirus-1-5-recovered-patients-suffer-dry-eye\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">South China Morning Post.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Scientists found that patients who had COVID-19 had a higher risk for eye disease.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In fact, about 21.5% of patients had one sign of developing the condition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Symptoms:&nbsp;<\/strong>The most common COVID-19 symptom was blurred vision, followed by itching, pain and burning sensations, per&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/hong-kong\/health-environment\/article\/3172177\/coronavirus-1-5-recovered-patients-suffer-dry-eye\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">South China Morning Post.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tearing, discharge and redness were also mentioned among the top symptoms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other symptoms included \u201cgrittiness, light sensitivity and lid swelling,\u201d but these were the least common symptoms, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/hong-kong\/health-environment\/article\/3172177\/coronavirus-1-5-recovered-patients-suffer-dry-eye\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">South China Morning Post.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Flashback:&nbsp;<\/strong>Dr. Nina Aslam, a general practitioner who works for Goldeneye Eye Care in the United Kingdom, told&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/life-style\/health\/1549763\/omicron-symptoms-conjunctivitis-eye-signs-covid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Express<\/a>&nbsp;back in January that the omicron variant often caused conjunctivitis \u2014 or pinkeye \u2014 in patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cCell receptors by which COVID variants enter the body are present in the eye,\u201d she said at the time, as I wrote for the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/coronavirus\/2022\/1\/20\/22893028\/omicron-variant-symptom-early-warning-covid-19-pink-eye-infection\" target=\"_blank\">Deseret News.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cThe virus penetrates the body by tricking the receptors for the Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE-2) into thinking the virus is the ACE-2 enzyme.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cThese receptors are found in different parts of the eye \u2014 cells which line the retina, eye white and
