{"id":5691,"date":"2022-10-26T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-10-26T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.cov19longhaulfoundation.org\/?p=5691"},"modified":"2022-10-26T06:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-10-26T06:00:00","slug":"covid-19-linked-to-increase-in-us-pregnancy-related-deaths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cov19longhaulfoundation.org\/?p=5691","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19 linked to increase in US pregnancy-related deaths"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Authors:   Amanda Seitz\/AP<strong>Posted:\u00a0<\/strong>OCT 19, 2022  News Nation<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 COVID-19 drove a dramatic increase in the number of women who died from pregnancy or childbirth complications in the U.S. last year, a crisis that has disproportionately claimed Black and Hispanic women as victims, according to a government report released Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gao.gov\/products\/gao-23-105871\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">report lays out grim trends<\/a>&nbsp;across the country for expectant mothers and their newborn babies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It finds that pregnancy-related deaths have spiked nearly 80% since 2018, with COVID-19 being a factor in a quarter of the 1,178 deaths reported last year. The percentage of preterm and low birthweight babies also went up last year, after holding steady for years.
