Symptoms such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/departments-centers\/headache-subspecialty-group\/overview\/ovc-20443693?mc_id=us&amp;utm_source=newsnetwork&amp;utm_medium=l&amp;utm_content=content&amp;utm_campaign=mayoclinic&amp;geo=national&amp;placementsite=enterprise&amp;invsrc=other&amp;cauid=100721\">headaches<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org\/discussion\/mayo-clinic-minute-dealing-with-brain-fog-from-long-covid-19\/#:~:text=Short%2Dterm%20memory%20loss%2C%20confusion,It's%20harder%20to%20do.?mc_id=us&amp;utm_source=newsnetwork&amp;utm_medium=l&amp;utm_content=content&amp;utm_campaign=mayoclinic&amp;geo=national&amp;placementsite=enterprise&amp;invsrc=other&amp;cauid=100721\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">brain fog<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/tinnitus\/vid-20455326?mc_id=us&amp;utm_source=newsnetwork&amp;utm_medium=l&amp;utm_content=content&amp;utm_campaign=mayoclinic&amp;geo=national&amp;placementsite=enterprise&amp;invsrc=other&amp;cauid=100721\">ringing in the ears<\/a>&nbsp;have been reported, and recently, physicians are seeing more patients with gastrointestinal problems.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/biographies\/vanichkachorn-greg-m-d-m-p-h\/bio-20470118?mc_id=us&amp;utm_source=newsnetwork&amp;utm_medium=l&amp;utm_content=content&amp;utm_campaign=mayoclinic&amp;geo=national&amp;placementsite=enterprise&amp;invsrc=other&amp;cauid=100721\">Greg Vanichkachorn, M.D.<\/a>, director of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/?mc_id=us&amp;utm_source=newsnetwork&amp;utm_medium=l&amp;utm_content=content&amp;utm_campaign=mayoclinic&amp;geo=national&amp;placementsite=enterprise&amp;invsrc=other&amp;cauid=100721\">Mayo Clinic&#8217;<\/a>s<em>&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/connect.mayoclinic.org\/blog\/post-covid-recovery\/tab\/next-steps\/?mc_id=us&amp;utm_source=newsnetwork&amp;utm_medium=l&amp;utm_content=content&amp;utm_campaign=mayoclinic&amp;geo=national&amp;placementsite=enterprise&amp;invsrc=other&amp;cauid=100721\">COVID&nbsp;Activity Rehabilitation Program<\/a>, describes the most common symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Patients in the rehabilitation program&nbsp;are reporting a variety of digestive issues, from mild&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/symptoms\/nausea\/basics\/definition\/sym-20050736?mc_id=us&amp;utm_source=newsnetwork&amp;utm_medium=l&amp;utm_content=content&amp;utm_campaign=mayoclinic&amp;geo=national&amp;placementsite=enterprise&amp;invsrc=other&amp;cauid=100721\">nausea<\/a>&nbsp;and decreased appetite to severe&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/constipation\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20354253?mc_id=us&amp;utm_source=newsnetwork&amp;utm_medium=l&amp;utm_content=content&amp;utm_campaign=mayoclinic&amp;geo=national&amp;placementsite=enterprise&amp;invsrc=other&amp;cauid=100721\">constipation<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/food-allergy\/expert-answers\/food-allergy\/faq-20058538?mc_id=us&amp;utm_source=newsnetwork&amp;utm_medium=l&amp;utm_content=content&amp;utm_campaign=mayoclinic&amp;geo=national&amp;placementsite=enterprise&amp;invsrc=other&amp;cauid=100721\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">food intolerance<\/a>, physical reactions to certain foods, says Dr. Vanichkachorn, a physician in Mayo Clinic\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/departments-centers\/infectious-diseases\/sections\/orc-20456904?mc_id=us&amp;utm_source=newsnetwork&amp;utm_medium=l&amp;utm_content=content&amp;utm_campaign=mayoclinic&amp;geo=national&amp;placementsite=enterprise&amp;invsrc=other&amp;cauid=100721\">Division of Public Health, Infectious Diseases<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we have seen firsthand has also been documented in medical literature,\u201d he adds.&nbsp; Among 147 patients with no prior gastrointestinal problems, 16% reported having new digestive symptoms roughly 100 days after their COVID-19 infection, according to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34468069\/\">study<\/a>&nbsp;published in March. The most common symptoms included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Abdominal pain: 7.5%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Constipation: 6.8%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diarrhea: 4.1%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vomiting: 4.1%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35383423\/\">study<\/a>&nbsp;published in April, researchers found that patients with long COVID were experiencing conditions known as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/medical-professionals\/digestive-diseases\/news\/understanding-and-managing-chronic-abdominal-bloating-and-distension\/mac-20511032?mc_id=us&amp;utm_source=newsnetwork&amp;utm_medium=l&amp;utm_content=content&amp;utm_campaign=mayoclinic&amp;geo=national&amp;placementsite=enterprise&amp;invsrc=other&amp;cauid=100721\">disorders of gut brain interaction<\/a>.&nbsp;Symptoms with this condition include&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/heartburn\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20373223?mc_id=us&amp;utm_source=newsnetwork&amp;utm_medium=l&amp;utm_content=content&amp;utm_campaign=mayoclinic&amp;geo=national&amp;placementsite=enterprise&amp;invsrc=other&amp;cauid=100721\">heartburn<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/dysphagia\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20372028?mc_id=us&amp;utm_source=newsnetwork&amp;utm_medium=l&amp;utm_content=content&amp;utm_campaign=mayoclinic&amp;geo=national&amp;placementsite=enterprise&amp;invsrc=other&amp;cauid=100721\">trouble swallowing<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/irritable-bowel-syndrome\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20360016?mc_id=us&amp;utm_source=newsnetwork&amp;utm_medium=l&amp;utm_content=content&amp;utm_campaign=mayoclinic&amp;geo=national&amp;placementsite=enterprise&amp;invsrc=other&amp;cauid=100721\">irritable bowel syndrome<\/a>, constipation,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/diarrhea\/diagnosis-treatment\/drc-20352246?mc_id=us&amp;utm_source=newsnetwork&amp;utm_medium=l&amp;utm_content=content&amp;utm_campaign=mayoclinic&amp;geo=national&amp;placementsite=enterprise&amp;invsrc=other&amp;cauid=100721\">diarrhea<\/a>, bloating and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/urinary-incontinence\/in-depth\/bladder-control-problem\/art-20046597?mc_id=us&amp;utm_source=newsnetwork&amp;utm_medium=l&amp;utm_content=content&amp;utm_campaign=mayoclinic&amp;geo=national&amp;placementsite=enterprise&amp;invsrc=other&amp;cauid=100721\">incontinence<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile we are not sure yet, there are several possible ways the COVID-19 infection could cause gastrointestinal problems,\u201d Dr. Vanichkachorn says. \u201cFor example, the lining of the gut has a large amount of the receptors that the SARS-COV2 virus uses to invade cells. The general inflammation caused by the infection can also disrupt the normal bacteria that live in the gut and stimulate some of the gastrointestinal system\u2019s nerves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Someone experiencing these symptoms as part of post-COVID syndrome should make sure they are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinichealthsystem.org\/hometown-health\/speaking-of-health\/tips-for-drinking-more-water\">hydrated<\/a>&nbsp;and eat a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/nutrition-and-healthy-eating\/basics\/healthy-diets\/hlv-20049477?mc_id=us&amp;utm_source=newsnetwork&amp;utm_medium=l&amp;utm_content=content&amp;utm_campaign=mayoclinic&amp;geo=national&amp;placementsite=enterprise&amp;invsrc=other&amp;cauid=100721\">healthy diet<\/a>, Dr. Vanichkachorn advises. Fad and extreme diets have not been found to be helpful in long COVID, he adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInstead, we recommend a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/nutrition-and-healthy-eating\/multimedia\/mediterranean-diet\/sls-20077104?mc_id=us&amp;utm_source=newsnetwork&amp;utm_medium=l&amp;utm_content=content&amp;utm_campaign=mayoclinic&amp;geo=national&amp;placementsite=enterprise&amp;invsrc=other&amp;cauid=100721\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mediterranean diet<\/a>&nbsp;with a reduction in processed foods. Second, avoid using lots of over-the-counter products to treat your symptoms,\u201d Dr. Vanichkachorn says. \u201cSometimes, this can make the problem worse.
